We believe that every boy is a natural artist, irrespective of his experience and abilities with a paintbrush. The true essence of art is expression, and the art studio is designed to be a safe, nurturing and inspiring space where each boy is free to express and explore his individuality.
The Ridge School offers art classes within the academic timetable, formally beginning from Grade 4. Each week, our boys partake in an hour of art instruction that aids in their overall development.
So Much More Than Scribbles On A Page
If you thought art was purely drawing, painting or sculpting, think again! Art is wonderful for children because it promotes cognitive development and critical thinking. In our art classes at The Ridge School, our learners exercise the brain in a way that can’t compare with other school subjects.
Art class is a time and space where the boys are free to express themselves, work in groups or individually, and learn about drawing, painting, printing and sculpture. More importantly, art allows boys to connect with their creativity and think about themselves in relation to their context. Every art project that Ridge boys become immersed in is designed to challenge them to solve problems and become aware of their thinking.
This way, boys develop resilience, confidence and emotional intelligence in their prep years.
No matter which style of art your son is practising on any given day, he will be stimulated in the most proactive ways. All art techniques taught at our school involve:

Our Comprehensive Art Syllabus
The Ridge School’s art syllabus is one of the best in South Africa and has been highly commended by our past pupils and parents. Our current syllabus includes Visual Literacy, Art Appreciation, Art Techniques and Art History (including South African and African art). When possible, our boys are granted outings to museums and art galleries when possible. Ultimately, our art programme aims to develop the boys’ cultural, social and environmental awareness, broaden their appreciation and respect for life, and enhance healthy communication.
