All The World’s A Stage, And Ridge Boys Take The Spotlight!

There is a reason why Shakespeare, poetry and literature are included in modern school curriculums: They invite us to explore the depths of the human condition and, in turn, ourselves. Cultural education can be seen as a glue that unites us and makes us more accepting of one another as human beings.

At The Ridge School, cultural disciplines on offer are almost as extensive as our range of sports because we aim to produce well-balanced individuals who are not afraid to step out of their comfort zones and achieve greatness.

A Flourishing Drama Programme

Drama is part of the Senior Prep timetable and is offered as an afternoon club for those boys with a particular interest and talent in the subject. As an established Ridge School tradition since 1921, there’s a much-anticipated yearly production, alternating between a Senior Prep production and a Grade 7 performance of a Shakespeare play. Our most recent Shakespearean adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s

Dream was a hit with both parents and learners.

When it comes to our drama programme, the aim is not so much to create Oscar-worthy actors but to allow a fulfilling, insightful experience for each boy. The developmental and learning gems that come with this are priceless, and our boys will never forget the hard work, the bright lights and the well-earned applause on stage.

Cultural Events ‒ A Time To Shine

When your son becomes part of The Ridge family, he will have no shortage of cultural events to look forward to. Our Senior Prep boys are encouraged to participate in our Drama and Poetry Evening twice a year. Here, the boys can volunteer to perform a choral verse, act out a mini-drama, recite poetry, or present something of a dramatic nature on stage. They receive some assistance from staff, but it’s really meant to be their ‘Five Minutes of Fame’!

At The Ridge, we feel participating in cultural events is highly beneficial to boys in this age group as they learn so much from the preparation and delivery in front of their peers and parents. There’s nothing like it to help them break out of their shells and build confidence that will last for years to come.

Imagination Sparks With Fireside Tales

Once a year, our school hall transforms into the magical atmosphere of Fireside Tales ‒ one of several annual events where we celebrate the rich cultural side of our community and school. In the past, our sister schools have joined us to bring the isiZulu oral tradition stories and characters alive. Some of our other similar cultural events are the Music Soiree and the Art Exhibition, allowing our boys to showcase their talents and appreciate all forms of art.

Give your son a colourful, nourishing cultural education that will contribute to his overall development and self-awareness. Contact The Ridge School on 011 481 5800 for more information.
