The Two-Fold Benefit Of Project Based Learning

The Two-Fold Benefit Of Project Based Learning

We may not realise it, but projects are part of our lives from the time we are babies into adulthood. In one way or another, we are always problem-solving and finding creative solutions to all sorts of challenges, whether it’s how to reach for that toy, how to balance soccer with maths exams, or how to secure the ideal job.

The Ridge School is proud to include Project Based Learning in our curriculum, giving our boys a truly well-developed, all-around education that prepares them well for the real world.

What Is Project Based Learning?

Project Based Learning (PBL) is offered in our school in Grade 5 and integrates the subjects: Geography, History, Design & Technology and Science. The boys are divided into smaller groups in order for their teachers to facilitate monitoring and guidance. This type of learning is hugely beneficial as it covers two main aspects of school education: one covering the curriculum requirements and the other nurturing boys to become critical thinkers and natural problem solvers. Let’s take a look at each of these benefits of PBL.

Investigative, Collaborative Learning

PBL is a progressive method that is different from traditional teaching in many ways. Rather than purely studying or memorising facts from a textbook, it requires boys to investigate and solve a real-world problem. In some cases, there will be a complex, engaging and authentic question or challenge to which the boys will be required to respond. Their learning is self-guided because at several junctures, they are provided with choices which then lead them on a self-directed learning journey that is deep and meaningful. In addition, PBL promotes skills such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, problem-solving, perseverance, collaboration, information literacy and technology.

Meeting Curriculum Requirements

Projects can take up quite a lot of time, and you may wonder if this will detract attention from your son’s curriculum requirements. However, with the way we structure PBL at The Ridge School, there is no need to worry about your son falling behind in any way. In fact, through projects, your son can connect with peers and with academic material in a way he really enjoys while at the same time still covering curriculum outcomes and assessments.

Because our boys are new to this approach, our current course is a guided one with careful scaffolding. We aim to provide boys with a sense of responsibility for their own learning and allow them to actively engage with topics and express themselves freely. It is wonderful to observe their excitement and enthusiasm for their next project!
