Planting Seeds For Growth In Junior Prep
In our Junior Prep years (Grade 0-3), our boys are given an exciting introduction to phonics which teaches them how to read and spell and forms a vital part of their literacy journey. Our rigorous reading programme helps develop fluency in reading, comprehension skills and a love for reading which our boys carry with them well beyond their schooling years. During English lessons, Ridge junior boys are introduced to handwriting skills so they can express themselves clearly and neatly in the written form. The English department in the Junior Prep lays a wonderfully strong foundation for the boys where they can confidently work through the curriculum.
Developing A Firm Grasp Of The English Language
In the Senior Prep phase (Grade 4-7), the English department continues to encourage reading through teacher-based initiatives. This means that our brilliant English teachers embrace all four learning outcomes, reading, writing, speaking and listening in our boys’ education. Combined with a knowledge of language structures, this teaching approach helps our boys learn a variety of skills and boosts their confidence in the subject. As a result, Ridge boys can sit for English exams calmly and confidently and are able to meet the standards of what is required at their level. The senior boys also enjoy the opportunity to participate in inter-school Chatterbox Festivals, which celebrate and promote public speaking.
Living Through Literature
At The Ridge School, we use texts as an important teaching tool throughout different grades and subjects. When it comes to English, we use a variety of modern and classic texts and literature to help broaden our boys’ general knowledge, create awareness and provide opportunities which expose them to the wider world.
